5 Things You Need To Know Today in Framingham: August 7

5th Annual Sock Hop, Brown Bag discussion on nutrition, country music tonight on the Village Green, and Carnival in downtown Framingham.

1. The main Framingham Library will host its 3rd Brown Bag series event today. This month, get tips about nutrition and health from MaryEllen Giombetti from noon to 1 p.m. at the main Framingham Library. She will talk about nutrition and you will leave with helpful tips on food planning, metabolism boosters, portion control, hydration, “superfoods” and their benefits. Click here to read more.

2. Today is National Purple Heart Day. The Purple Heart medal is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action.

Tonight, the Framingham Veterans Department is hosting its 5th Annual Sock Hop. The event is to collect new white, cotton socks for homeless Veterans. Attendees to the Framingham summer concert are asked to donate socks.

3. SLO Grass, a country band, performs tonight on the Framingham Centre Common from 6:30 to 8:30. Next week, August 14, is the final concert of the summer.

4. St. Stephen’s Church in downtown Framingham is hosting a carnival today, and over the weekend, with Fiesta Shows. The carnival in downtown Framingham will feature rides, games, and food. It is open today from 6 to 11 p.m. There is an unlimited ride special today for $25.

5. Earlier this week, Governor Charlie Baker was joined by Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Senate President Stan Rosenberg and stakeholders to enact a 50 percent increase in the Massachusetts Earned Income Tax Credit for more than 400,000 working individuals and families in the Commonwealth.
