5 Things You Need To Know Today in Framingham: May 6

Framingham Town Meeting rejected citizen petitions to change assessing practices, read to dogs at the library, and Mary crowning ceremony.

1. Last night, Framingham Town Meeting members rejected two citizen petitions by Town Meeting member Deborah Butler in a Special Town Meeting.

Butler wanted to have Framingham assessors elected instead of appointed, and she wanted to create a Town Meeting standing committee on assessing. Town Meeting members overwhelmingly rejected both ideas, after a 90-minute discussion.

2. After the Special Town meeting was concluded. Framingham Town Meeting members resumed discussion and votes on parts of the $19 million proposed capital budget article. Town Meeting members overwhelmingly approved $600,000 to help fund the clean up of Mary Dennison park.

Town Meeting resumes tonight -- night 5 -- at 7:30 in Nevins Hall in the Memorial Building. Framingham Patch will be at Town Meeting, but will NOT be live blogging this week.

5. Kids can read to dogs at the Framingham Library tonight. From 7 to 8 p.m., kids can spend 10-15 minutes improving their reading skills the fun way by reading aloud to a certified therapy dog. Children can pick the book but pre-registration is required by calling 508-532-5570.
