Advanced Math and Science Academy Wins 2015 High School Quiz Show State Championship

This is the charter school's first championship title in the academic tournament.

WGBH’s High School Quiz Show crowned Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) the 2015 Season 6 Massachusetts Champion on Saturday, May 16.

This is AMSA’s first championship title on WGBH’s award-winning academic tournament. The charter school is located in Marlborough.

“Congratulations to the Advanced Math and Science Academy High School Quiz Show team,” said WGBH President and CEO Jon Abbott, in a press release. “The students and their coach have done their community proud and proven themselves worthy of the state championship title. The depth of knowledge that Massachusetts high school students bring to WGBH’s air continues to impress and to demonstrate the dedication of educators across the Commonwealth.”

Teammates and AMSA juniors Abhinav, Shashank, Aniruddh and Timothy represented their school throughout the season, coached by history and government teacher Jessica Bowen. Ashwin, also a junior, served as an alternate. It is WGBH policy does not allow the release of minors’ full names.

Hosted by Billy Costa, WGBH’s High School Quiz Show’s sixth season kicked off last November with the “Super Sunday” qualifying event, where 120 Massachusetts high schools took an identical 100-question oral quiz at WGBH Studios. Sixteen schools advanced to the televised weekly tournament.

Framingham High was one of the 120 Massachusetts High School’s to compete and made it to the quarterfinals.

The championship was followed by the broadcast of the Governor’s Cup Challenge.

High School Quiz Show Massachusetts champion AMSA took on New Hampshire Public Television’s Granite State Challenge champion, Bishop Guertin High School.

The team from Bishop Guertin came out ahead to win the Governor’s Cup. This year’s Governor’s Cup matchup was hosted by WGBH at their Brighton studios.

High School Quiz Show is endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education and the Massachusetts PTA. The Princeton Review judges the televised competition and reviews the program’s questions. Questions on the show are aligned with the Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects that include literature, history, science and math, as well as current events and general knowledge.

Major funding for High School Quiz Show is provided by Safety Insurance. Additional funding is provided by Massachusetts Teachers Association, XFINITY from Comcast, Harvard Summer School Secondary School Program, Bentley University and Subaru of New England.
