Ashland Crash Victims Recovering; Police Still Investigating

All five individuals in the Kia Forte, that crashed early Sunday morning, had ties to Framingham High School.

Framingham High senior Damari Yarrell underwent six hours of surgery this week. He has a broken pelvis and a rod in his leg, but yesterday he was out of bed, stretching and standing in his hospital room, with the help of a nurse.

Yarrell was one of four passengers in a Kia Forte driven by Framingham High 2012 graduate Donnell Shivers Sunday morning that crashed into two poles, went down an embankment, and ended up in a swampy area on East Union Street near Ashland High School.

The other passengers were Framingham High junior Adam Ortiz, and former Framingham High students Jasmine Reyes and Glenda Torres.

Ashland Police, with Massachusetts State Police, are still investigating the crash, in which speed may have been a factor. Police have not charged or cited Shivers, at this time.

Yarrell has been getting a steady stream of visitors to his hospital room at UMass Memorial in Worcester, since the Sunday crash, including Selectman Jason Smith, who coached him in Framingham Youth Football.

β€œThanks to all my family and friends, who have shown me so much support,” said Yarrell, who is a member of the Framingham High football team.

Ashland and Framingham firefighters had to extricate two of the individuals from the vehicle, including Yarrell.

Two of the five in the vehicle were flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial in Worcester and three were taken to MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. None had life-threatening injuries.

Reyes was the first of the passengers to be released on Sunday.

Ortiz, who has a broken nose and a knee injury, was released earlier this week. He was expected to return to school this week or next week.

Shivers, an Ashland resident, is up and walking, as well. Torres condition was not available.
