IMAGE GALLERY: Civil War Encampment Ends Sunday

The Framingham History Center is hosting the free family-friendly event 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 4.

Shake hands with President Lincoln and learn what it was like to be a Confederate or Union soldier, as the Framingham History Center continues its Civil War encampment Sunday.

The free, family-friendly event ends today Sunday, Oct. 4. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is a church service today at the Chapel at Edgell Grove Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., followed by a grave site service for Framingham’s General George H. Gordon at 10 a.m. in the cemetery.

“We are creating a Sturbridge Village-type atmosphere here in Framingham this weekend,” said Framingham History Center Executive Director Annie Murphy, but from the time period of the 1860s.

There is a company drill from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a cannon demonstration and firing at 1:30 p.m. followed by a dress parade and a troop review with President Lincoln at 2:15 p.m.

The encampment will close with a cannon fire at 3 p.m.

Visitors will have a chance to learn about the way of life during the Civil War, and meet Framingham hero General George H. Gordon, President Lincoln, Julia Ward Howe, Andover’s Harriet Beecher Stowe, and others characters.

And there are lots of activities planned for children, including an American Girl Addy-themed scavenger hunt from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join in and sing-a-long with the Shades of Gray Camp Band from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Learn about careers and crafts by stopping by the tin smith, the blacksmith, and the pottery and spinning wheel demonstrations.

Stop by the general store tent too.

At the Framingham History Center tent there will be book signings. The schedule is:

  • noon to 1 p.m. Tom Ellis – Framingham’s Civil War Service: A History Roster
  • 1 to 2 p.m. Fred Wallace – Framingham’s Civil War Hero: The Life of General George H. Gordon
  • 2 to 3 p.m. Pat Lavin – My Dear Esty: Letters from Framingham’s Civil War Soldiers
