Distance Runners Shatter Framingham High Track Record

The 4X100 relay team for the Flyers boys track team qualified for the state meet.

The Framingham High boys track team competed in the Division 1 state relays met at Newton South High School on Sunday.

The big news on the day was that the Flyers shattered a school record in the distance medley relay and qualified for the state meet in the 4X100 relay with a time of 46.08 seconds, said head coach Chris Collins.

The distance medley relay team shattered the Framingham High school record by 12 seconds running the race in 10:50 minutes.

Senior Andrew Harrod ran the 1200 in 3:24.5 minutes, sophomore Brendan Retalic ran the 400 in 55.3 seconds, junior Chris Barone ran the 800 in 2:04 minutes, and captain Mike McDonald passed four teams to bring the Flyers into second place overall with a 4:26.2 minute 1,600-meter anchor leg, explained coach Collins.

The runners in the 4X100 relay were Nick Benoit (11.6), Tristan Perez (11.6), Chigozie Nna (11.3), and Vinicius Tavares (11.1 second split.)

In the 4x110 hurdles junior Ben Kirchman, captain Paul Halberstadt, captain David Welch, and sophomore Matt Kimmelstiel finished in sixth place. Kimmelstiel ran a 19.8 seconds in his first ever hurdles attempt, said Collins.

The Flyers did well in the field events on Sunday.

Junior Marc Umumbu threw 155’11” in the discus. Welch threw 98’9”, and Jake Ferraro threw 88’5” for third place overall.

In the javelin event Welch, Ferraro and Halberstadt combined for sixth place.
