Flyers Finish Season 7th in State

Framingham High swimmer Kara McCurdy finished second in the state in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events.

The Framingham High girls swim and dive team finished the season seventh in the state at the Division 1 Championship meet Sunday at Blodgett Pool at Harvard University.

Framingham finished with 166 points. Andover with 527 points took the state title followed by two teams Framingham lost to this season, Acton-Boxbororough with 233 points and Newton North with 217 points.

Sophomore diver Halia Bower finished second in the state in diving, improving one place from her freshman third place finish last season.

But again it was team depth, that helped propel the divers into the top 10.

The Flyers had four swimmers in the top 16 in the 500-yard freestyle, and 3 divers in the top 15 in the championship meet.

In the distance event, McCurdy finished second behind freshman Victoria Ambrose of Andover. Framingham sophomore Julia Long finished in 8th place, senior Natalie Burkett finished in 14th place and junior Isabella Tersoni finished in 16th place.

Burkett also finished in 20th place in the individual medley event.

In the diving competition, Bower finished second, but Framingham senior Elena Jacob finished sixth and sophomore Kalina Chin finished in 13th place.

The Flyers finished 8th in both the 200-yard relay and the 400-yard relay. On both relay teams were Kara McCurdy and senior Haley McCurdy, Devon Tice and Emily Osborne.

In the 100-yard race, Tice finished 16th overall in the state championship meet for Framingham.

In the 100-yard backstroke event, the Flyers places three swimmers in the top 20. Senior Aja Matzker finished 14th, sophomore Olivia Nelson finished 16th and junior Mary Zschau finished 20th on Sunday.

In the 100-yard breaststroke event, Framingham junior Alessandra Miranda finished 18th overall.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Framingham seniors Haley McCurdy and Anna Parra finished 18th and 26th overall in the Division 1 Championship meet.

In the sprint event, the 50-yard freestyle, Osborne was the top Flyers in 18th place. Tice finished in 20th place and junior Katherine Castro finished in 27th place.

Several swimmers, including McCurdy had been battling illnesses the final week of swimming. Yesterday, concluded the season for the girls swim and dive team.

The Flyers, under head coach Michael Foley, finished the regular season 10-3-1.

But more importantly, the team won its 12th straight Bay State Conference Championship title.

Last weekend, the Flyers finished fourth at the South Sectionals meet.
