She was named the high school’s associate principal in the summer of 2014, after she was not given the position of high school principal.
Scott named two finalists for the position, after Michael Welch left to become the Superintendent of Schools in Dedham in the spring of 2014. The finalists were Torbert and Adam Goldberg, who started as high school principal on July 1, 2014.
Goldberg, a Framingham resident, took a leave of absence in the fall for a back issue and then went on leave again in December. He announced his resignation in March. He is on leave and will be paid through June 30.
Torbert was one of the four vice principals at Framingham High, under Welch.
Below is the memo Scott sent to parents on Wednesday afternoon:
Over the past two weeks, I have spent many hours listening to and reflecting on the comments from community members, staff members, administrators and students of Framingham High School regarding the next building leaderSome of these comments were shared in various meetings set up at the high school while other opinions were emailed to me. Numerous concerns were raised from the need for change, improving the culture and increasing instructional leadership, to maintaining stability and creating a strong connection between
students and leadership.
Upon reflection, I have offered Interim Principal, Elyse Torbert, the position of FHS Principal effective July 1, 2015. I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Torbert has accepted the position and will assume the principal role.
I firmly believe that Mrs. Torbert will be able to effect change and new direction at FHS. She has already begun to redefine the vision and operating procedures for FHS. Her transition to the role of principal will provide stability for the school which was highlighted by the majority of those I spoke with. Her understanding of the high school curriculum, staff, and community were heralded as important reasons for her assuming the leadership role.
Ms. Torbert has served Framingham High School since January of this year, as Interim Principal.
I encourage all community members to support Mrs. Torbert over the next few months as she transitions to her new role on July 1st as principal at Framingham High School.
