Hemenway Elementary Collects Almost 400 Pounds of Candy
The candy was donated to Wayland dentist Michael Putt, who will ship the candy to Operation Gratitude, for troops overseas.
Hemenway Elementary School fifth graders collected 396 pounds of candy, after Halloween.
This was the third year, fifth graders participated in an Operation Gratitude candy drive.
This year, a group of fifth grade students organized the collection and the volunteers. They also collected the candy all week before school and then had the candy transported to Wayland Dental.

Wayland Dental dentist Michael Putt, a former U.S. Army Veteran, organizes a local collection of candy for Operational Gratitude. Putt was a dental surgeon to the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, while serving in the Army.
Operation Gratitude is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that annually sends 100,000 care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation to military members serving overseas.

The Hemenway students who organized this yearβs drive were: Sophie Perlman, Brendan Treacy, Emma Angelo, Summer Harrala, Ben Sharon, Jessica Garcia, Ryan McLoughlin, Billy Bertalino, Shea Callahan, and Joey Skura.
