The Framingham-based charter school is named for the late teacher in space Christa Corrigan McAuliffe, who grew up in Framingham, and graduated from Marian High and Framingham State. She tragically died when the NASA space shuttle Challenge exploded in January of 1986.

Since 2011, on the 25th anniversary of her death, the charter school has been holding a science event in her memory. The event was created by science teacher Dan Anderson.
