Open Spirit—“a place of hope, health, and harmony” is hosting a unique interfaith event for residents of Framingham and surrounding communities on Tuesday, June 30.

Breaking the Fast of Ramadan: When Spirits Bond is an opportunity for people of all faiths (or none) to share food and learn about Iftar, breaking the fast of Ramadan.

“Ramadan is a very special month for over 1.6 billion Muslims throughout the world,” says Shaheen Akhtar of the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland. “It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control.” Muslims fast every day of Ramadan from dawn to sunset. Iftar most often involves families and communities coming together to share the joy of breaking their fast.“

It is important for people of diverse faiths to come together in the spirit of friendship and understanding to learn about each other’s sacred traditions,” says Rabbi Katy Allen, an Interfaith Chaplain with The One Earth Collaborative, a project of Open Spirit. Allen will begin the event by leading a meditative “standing on sacred ground” circle.

Following the opening circle, participants will hear a brief presentation on Ramadan by Chaplain Shareda Hosein of the Islamic Society of Boston and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.
