Medal of Liberty Awarded To Francis Moran, Killed During WWII

Second Lt. Francis Moran of Framingham died on Aug. 17, 1944 in Italy.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty is awarded to service men, who were killed in action.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark presented the Medal of Liberty to the family of Francis Moran, who died during World War II, at the Town of Framingham’s 2015 Memorial Day ceremony.

Michael Moran of Framingham accepted the medal in honor of his uncle he never met, who was killed in Italy.

Second Lt. Francis Moran of Framingham died on Aug. 17, 1944 over Corsica, Italy when his bomber crashed.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty was designed to resemble the Purple Heart. On the back is the recipient’s branch of service and name with the words “In Honored Memory ... Service and Sacrifice.”

Moran accepted the medal on behalf of Francis’ daughter Mary Francis Moran, who lives in California.
