Medal of Liberty Awarded to Wilfred Mitchell, Killed During WWII
Richard Mitchell, received the medal for his brother, who grew up in Framingham, and was killed on Sept. 9, 1943.
The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty is awarded to service men, who were killed in action.
Congresswoman Katherine Clark presented the Medal of Liberty to the brother of Wilfred Mitchell, who died during World War II, at the Town of Framingham’s 2015 Memorial Day ceremony.
Richard Mitchell accepted the medal in honor of his brother, who died on Sept 9. 1943, when his bomber was shot down over Sicily. It was Wilfred’s first combat mission.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty was designed to resemble the Purple Heart. On the back is the recipient’s branch of service and name with the words “In Honored Memory ... Service and Sacrifice.”
Wilfred Mitchell is buried at Edgell Grove Cemetery in Framingham.

Mitchell, who lives in Berlin, attended the ceremony with his wife Jean and grandson Justin Lanequaley of Grafton, who is a U.S. Marine.
