Needham Leaps Past Flyers; Umumbu Qualifies for State Meet in Shot Put and Discus
The Framingham High boys track team is on the road Tuesday with a meet against the Wildcats of Weymouth at 3:45 p.m.

The Framingham boys track team traveled to Needham last week and lost 61-75 at DeFazio Field.
“It was a hard fought loss to Needham,” said head coach Chris Collins.
One highlight in the loss was that Marc Umumbu qualified for the state met in ”not one but two events,” said Collins.

Umumbu, a junior, won the shot put event and qualified for the state meet with a throw of 44-feet, 9-inches.
He also won the discus event with a throw of 131 feet, which also qualified him for the state meet,

The Flyers swept the discus event with Chris Elliott capturing second with a throw of 101’ 9.5” and senior Tristan Perez taking third with a throw of 85’ 1”.
In other field events, Collins noted these performances:
- Long Jump: Vinicius Tavares finished second at 17 feet, 9 inches
- Triple Jump: David Welch captured first at 17 feet and 4 inches.
- High Jump: Sophomore Matt Kimmelstiel finished in second place with a leap of 5 feet and 2 inches.
- Javelin: Junior captain Jake Ferraro took first with a throw of 147 feet and 4 inches. Welch took second at 146 feet and 10 inches.
In the track events, Flyer highlights included:
- 100: Tavares second place in 11.6 seconds and Kimmelstiel third in 11.7 seconds
- 400: Senior captain Welch third in 55.5 seconds
- 800: Chris Barone captured first in 2:05.3 minutes
- Mile: Junior captain Mike McDonald won the race in 4:34.42 minutes
- 2 Mile: Andrew Harrod finished second in 10:26 minutes
- 110 Hurdles: Ben Kirchman too second in 15.7 seconds
- 400 Hurdles: Andrew Kaluzny second in 64.4 seconds and freshman Nate Halberstadt third in 69.7 seconds.
Next up for the Flyers is an away meet against the Weymouth Wildcats on Tuesday, May 12.
