Rams Lose Season Opener to 10th Ranked Babson College

The Beavers defeated the Framingham State men's basketball team 69-41, in the Babson Invitational Tournament.

Babson Park, Mass.β€”Babson junior Joey Flannery scored 13 points and dished out six assists, while classmate Matthew Droney added a career-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting as 10th-ranked Babson College defeated visiting Framingham State University, 69-41, in the opening round of the Babson Invitational Tournament on Friday at Staake Gymnasium.

Senior Joseph McCabe scored 10 points, while sophomore Tony Alexandre added six points and seven rebounds to lead the Rams.

Tied at 15 midway through the first half, the Green and White ripped off a 13-0 run to take control of the game. Flannery scored seven points during the spurt, including a deep three-pointer from the right wing in transition to make it 28-15 with 3:48 to play until halftime. He then scored in transition to give the Beavers a 32-21 edge at the break.

Framingham State (0-1) got back-to-back three-pointers from junior Daniel Gould to pull within 34-29 with 17:39 to play, but Babson (1-0) followed with a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach. Nelsen had a pair of hoops during the spurt, which was capped on a bucket by Droney to make it 46-31 with 12:04 to play.

The Rams cut their deficit to 12 on a layup by Alexandre with 10:24 remaining, but the Green and White responded with a 14-2 run that included triples by Bohmiller, Colon and sophomore Nick Comenale (New York Mills, N.Y.) to make it 62-38 with a little over five minutes remaining.

The Beavers shot 50 percent from the field (28-of-56) and held a 38-12 edge in points in the paint. They also held a 36-31 edge on the glass and held the Rams to just 25.9 percent shooting (14-of-54).

Babson will face either Anna Maria or Bridgewater State in Saturday’s championship game at 4 p.m., while Framingham State will play in the 2 p.m. consolation game.
