REI Will Be Closed for Black Friday

The outdoor retailer is paying its employees to spend time in nature on the biggest shopping day of the year.

REI is not only encouraging its customers to enjoy the great outdoors on Black Friday, it’s paying its employees to do so.

REI’s 12,000 workersβ€”including those, at its Framingham store, will have the day off both Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

In the past, Black Friday has been among the retailer’s top 10 sales days of the year, and the company admits that being closed on Black Friday will impact its revenue.

But there is an upside. β€œIt’s created a great deal of awareness of REI,” Atlanta PR professional Mitch Leff says. β€œThey’re encouraging employees to spend time outside, which connects the announcement to their products and mission.
