SLIDESHOW: Author Grace Lin Visits McCarthy Elementary

Students got to see what real-life characters, details, and myths found their way into the award-winning author's novels.

Award-winning author and illustrator Grace Lin visited McCarthy Elementary School recently.

Lin, is award-winning author and illustrator of picture books, early readers, and middle-grade novels, including the 2010 Newbery Honor winner Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Ling & Ting, recipient of the Theodor Geisel Honor in 2011.

She presented Ugly Vegetables to kindergarten students and How a Book Is Made to first graders at the Framingham elementary school on Feb. 28.

She did a fun draw-along with second and third grade students with Are Your Books Real?

And did another draw-along with Where the Mountain Meets the Moon with fourth and fifth grade students.

Children got to see what real-life characters, details and myths found their way into Grace’s novels, how the Chinese New Year is celebrated and learn to draw a lucky dragon and enjoy a Chinese New Year-themed portion from one of Grace Lin’s books.

The program was supported in part by a grant from the Framingham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The program was supported in part by a grant from the Framingham Education Foundation, an independent, community-based nonprofit founded in 1990 to provide strategic support to the schools of the Framingham Public School System.
