SLIDESHOW: Flyers Lose First Meet of Season To Needham's Rockets

The Framingham High swim and dive team is now 6-1 on the season, with away meets against Wellesley on Tuesday and Newton North on Friday.

It was a battle of two undefeated Bay State League rivals Friday night at Keefe Technical’s Pool.

Both Framingham High and Needham High were 3-0 in the League before the meet started, with the Flyers seeking their seventh straight victory of the season.

The Rockets defeated the Flyers 100-84, to deliver Framingham its first loss of the season. The Flyers are now 6-1.

Sunday, Framingham participates in a coach’s invitational meet against Newton-North, Natick, Lowell, Chelmsford, Central Catholic, and Acton-Boxboro, which starts at 2 p.m. in Sudbury.

The Flyers have two League rivals this week, with away meets against Wellesley on Tuesday and Newton North on Friday.

Despite the loss, The Flyers had several highlights in the pool.

Sophomore Kara McCurdy won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle events. McCurdy, who holds the 500-yard freestyle record for the Flyers as a freshman, qualified for the state meet with her time Friday night.

Sophomore Julia Long finished third for the Flyers in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Isabella Tersoni finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle for Framingham.

“The distance team swam really well,” said Framingham Head Coach Mike Foley.

Tersoni was also the fastest Flyer in the 50-yard freestyle taking third in the race. Senior Devon Tice finished fourth with Needham’s Ellen Ingweson winning the spring event in 26.84 seconds.

Sophomore Halia Bower won the diving event, more than 80 points ahead of her teammate Catherine Turner in second place and Needham’s Olivia Curran in third.

“All the Framingham divers did well,” said Foley, ”with challenging dives.”

Sophomore Olivia Nelson won the 100-yard backstroke for Framingham in a time of 1:07.65. Needham finished second, third, fourth and fifth behind Nelson.


Tice finished third for the Flyers in the 100-yard freestyle race. Junior Katherine Castro finished fourth for Framingham. Needham’s Monika Hedman won the race.

Framingham senior Haley McCurdy finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hedman from Needham won the race in 1:15.01 minutes. Framingham sophomore Lizzy Tallino finished fourth.

Needham’s Ingwerson won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.63 minutes. Framingham senior Anna Para took fourth and senior Aja Matzker finished fourth for the Flyers.

Haley McCurdy finished second Framingham in the 200 individual medley behind Needham’s Elizabeth Bonvouloir. Maztker finished fourth for the Flyers.

The Flyers won the 200-yard freestyle relay with senior Emily Osborn, Tice, Tersoni and Kara McCurdy.

Framingham finished in second in the 400-yard relay and third in the medley relay.

Haley McCurdy, Alessandra Miranda, Nelson and Kara McCurdy made up the 400-yard relay team.
