The Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies performed Sunday at the 50th anniversary celebration of Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon.

Framingham musicians who performed yesterday included Tristan Elkins and Emily Tiger.

Members of the CHYS Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra performed Aaron Copland’s Buckaroo Holiday and Our Town, Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, Charles Ives Variations on America, as well as Gustav Holst’s Jupiter from the Planets, and music from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Formerly known as MetroWest Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies provide dedicated young musicians with orchestral and wind ensemble training in a demanding yet supportive environment.

The Clafin Hill Youth Symphonies, based in Milford, rehearse on Sundays at Mass Bay Community College in Framingham. CHYS includes more than 75 young musicians from 30 communities, including Framingham. The orchestra will hold auditions for new members in the fall.

Southwick’s Zoo opened in 1965 as Southwick’s Wild Animal Farm. Since then the zoo has expanded and yesterday held a Golden celebration, including a visit from Gov. Charlie Baker.
