SLIDESHOW: Poetry Cafe Makes Debut at Walsh Middle

Walsh Middle School's library was transformed into a Coffee House as grade 6 students read their original poems Tuesday.

There were tablecloths and candles on the table and jazz music playing in the Walsh Middle School library on Tuesday.

The library was transformed into a coffee house as grade 6 students a “pioneered” the first Poetry Cafe at the Framingham middle school. One-by-one students sat on stools and read their original poems.

The grade 6 English language arts teachers, Maggi Ciccarelli, Danielle Dowd, Susie Sanford, and Ruth Reedy created the “poetry cafe” so their students could showcase their written work in “spoken form” in front of their peers and parents.

After studying a 4-week poetry unit, the students were able to craft their poems using a combination of poetic devices, including alliteration, personification, simile, and metaphor.

Poetry topics ranged from baseball and lacrosse to cooking to dolphins and Puerto Rico, and of course family.

The Walsh Middle School PTO made a generous donation to create the Coffee House decor. Funds were also used to purchase refreshments.
