Officer Sustains Extensive Injuries After Being Struck While Working a Police Detail
Two Ipswich officers were injured Tuesday, one seriously, after being struck while working on Bay Road in Hamilton.

One Ipswich police officer sustained extensive injuries and another has been treated and released after a vehicle crashed into the officers while they worked a police detail in Hamilton.
Ipswich officer David Harrell radioed the Hamilton Communications Center at 10:03 a.m. Tuesday requesting medical aid and reporting he had been struck by a motor vehicle, according to a statement from the Hamilton Police Department.

Another Ipswich officer, Officer Zachery Bird, was also struck and sustained “extensive injuries to his lower extremities,” the statement continues. Both were transported to Beverly Hospital for treatment and neither officer’s injuries are considered life-threatening.
Ipswich Police Chief Paul Nikas said in a separate statement that he visited both officers this afternoon to offer his support to them and their families.

The two officers were standing on the side of Bay Road (Route 1A) as they worked a police detail when a 23-year-old Salem man who was traveling northbound struck the officers. The 23-year-old’s vehicle then struck one of the officer’s personal vehicles, which was parked nearby.
The crash remains under investigation.

Two police officers working a detail in Hamilton have been transported to the hospital following a crash at the corner of Rock Maple Avenue and Route 1A, according to Salem News.
Earlier reports indicated the crash occurred near Ortins Road and Route 1A.
A dispatcher with the Hamilton Police Department said no further information is available at this time.
According to the Salem News, the crash occurred at about 10 a.m. and involved two officers who are not with the Hamilton department.
