Teen Dies After Being Pulled From Quarry In Gloucester
An 18-year-old was found unresponsive an hour after not surfacing while swimming in Vernon's Pit with friends.
GLOUCESTER, MA — Police in Gloucester confirmed an 18-year-old died after disappearing into the water while swimming with friends in a quarry in Gloucester Wednesday.
Police and emergency crews were called to Vernon's Pit around 1:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a teenager failing to surface after jumping into the water while swimming with a group of friends.
Emergency crews launched a search of the quarry with divers and members of the Beverly Fire Department, Gloucester Assistant Fire Chief Robert Rivas said.

The teenager was found around 2:50 p.m. and was unresponsive. Crews rushed him to the hospital for further treatment where he later died, the Essex District Attorney's Office confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Police have not yet released the name of the teenager.

Though there are signs that say swimming is not allowed, Rivas said the spot is popular for swimming and pretty well-known in the area.
Rivas mentioned the dangers of jumping into quarries, noting that the deep, cold, and dark water makes for challenging terrain for rescuers.
