5 Things You Need to Know Today: May 10

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1. Last night . They voted in favor of most of the articles including an increase to the fines for public consumption of alcohol and marijuana.

2. The photography of Lindsey Payson will be featured in the Studies Abroad exhibit at the , 98 Hayden Rowe in Hopkinton from May 11 to June 1. Payson was the winner of the HCA’s recent On the Edge exhibit, and specializes in city and landscape photography.  She has also photographed concerts, events and food for the Boston Phoenix. A special reception, open to the public, will be held Friday, May 18 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Gallery hours are weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 pm.  The exhibition is free and open to the public. “Payson’s work is serene and contemplative,” said Kris Waldman, Artistic Director of the HCA. “She captures moments of time that are alive with unseen spirits.  It is an honor to be able to exhibit her work.” 

3. There is a tradition in Hopkinton to put on a post-prom party. The kids return from the prom, change into their shorts and t-shirts, and for the next six hours, enjoy a safe and fun environment with their friends. The party runs 11pm to 5am in the Athletic Center. Traditionally, sophomore parents help out at the party, and in turn, next year when your child is a junior, sophomore parents will chaperone him/her. Parents are needed to be posted at the doors, to ensure that all the party-goers stay safely inside the party.  Bring a book, iPod, crossword puzzle, etc.! Parents are also needed to help in the kitchen serving food and to float around the room making sure that all is well. 4. Lesley Reilly, owner of Hopkinton’s , announced that her studio has been designated as a Baptiste Inspired studio. A select group of approximately 30 yoga studios in the United States have earned affiliate studio status. Baptiste Affiliated studios are leaders in their communities and have an ongoing relationship with the Baptiste Power Yoga Institute to maintain the quality, standards and effectiveness of the Baptiste Yoga practices and principles.

5. Hopkinton residents can celebrate the true spirit of Mother’s Day this year by sending their mother an elegant bouquet that also helps fund programs for students at Perkins School for the Blind. The Watertown-based school will receive 20% of the purchase price of every “Charity In Bloom” floral arrangement ordered from Winston Flowers during May.
