Driver Who Led Cops On 30-Mile Chase From Hopkinton Arrested

The driver allegedly failed to stop when an officer attempted a traffic stop early Wednesday, then led police on a pursuit to Dorchester.

HOPKINTON, MA — A man who police say led them on a roughly 30-mile pursuit through several towns overnight Wednesday has been arrested on a slew of motor vehicle charges.

At around 1:15 a.m., a person reported a vehicle driving erratically on the eastbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Hopkinton, MetroWest Daily News reported.

Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle's driver failed to stop, so an officer began the pursuit, according to 7 News.

Police temporarily terminated the chase after the vehicle entered a road construction work zone in Southborough, MetroWest Daily News said, but resumed it after the vehicle left that zone in Natick, 7 News said.

Troopers deployed tire deflation devices at multiple points along the pursuit route ahead of the suspect's vehicle, which caused the vehicle to stop on Interstate 93 south near exit 12 in Dorchester, MetroWest Daily News said.

The vehicle's driver, Matthew Goewey, 32, of Torrington, Connecticut, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation, negligent operation in a work zone, and failure to stop/yield to traffic signs, 7 News said.

Boston EMS evaluated Goewey at the scene before officials took him into custody, 7 News said. He will be arraigned at Westboro District Court.
