Heat Advisory in Effect Today

The National Weather Service urges caution.

The National Weather Service in Boston issued a heat advisory for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. The high today is expected to reach the mid 90s, with a heat index of 105 degrees. A heat index is a term used to describe how the combination of temperature and humidity feels.

The NWS warns that conditions are dangerous for those spending prolonged periods of time outside. Heat illness is possible.

The NWS advises residents to avoid prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned environment, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

In addition, the service said that children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

When possible, reschedule strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours, wear light weight and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

If you work outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and
shaded conditions. Call 911, as heat stroke is an emergency.
