Holliston Girl Scout Wins Top Award

Kristen Deprey received her Girl Scout Gold Award on Wednesday.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is proud to announce that Holliston Girl Scout Kirsten Deprey received her Girl Scout Gold Award pin on Wednesday, June 20 at a ceremony at the Boxborough Holiday Inn. The event was attended by family, friends and Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts' CEO, Ruth N. Bramson, and Board President, Peggy Steven.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout can achieve, and it recognizes a service project that fulfills a need within a girl's community whether local or global, creates change, and becomes ongoing. To earn the award, girls must complete the Silver Award and a minimum of 80 hours of service. The project is more than a good service project—it encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. Just five percent, approximately, of all Girl Scouts earn this award each year.

Deprey’s project, Joy, created photo displays for the Timothy Daniels House, a local nursing home. In preparation, Deprey visited the facility to spend time with residents and get to know them, and she took a photography and collage workshop. Then she set out to capture images of the residents' favorite things, and used those images to create a scrapbook, two picture displays, and five small collages, which are now displayed in the building’s entrance and in individual rooms. Deprey hoped to address the loneliness experienced by the residents.
