Hopkinton Grad Releases First Album on iTunes

Hopkinton graduate Kyle Joseph ('08) collaborated with other local grads who live in New York City.

The following information was taken from a press release submitted by dot and logic.

Local connections seem to be alive and well even when transplanted to NYC.

Hopkinton High School graduate Kyle Joseph (2008) has collaborated with others from the Tri-Valley area to make a new record in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the independent music capital of the country.

Also working on the project are 2008 Hopkinton High School graduate Drew Clark and 2008 Wellesley High School graduate David Kaplan.

The record, Homebody, will be the debut release for Joseph’s new project, "dot and logic" which was released today (Nov. 19) on iTunes and Spotify

Joseph has been working at recording studio Cowboy Technical Services since moving to Brooklyn in 2012, and the MA transplants made the record there this past summer. “We would work ridiculous hours to stay out of the way of other clients who had booked the studio during theday” Joseph recalls. “Late at night, early in the morning whenever the studio wasn’t being used.”

Joseph wrote, recorded, produced, mixed, and played on the record, and added other musicians from the Tri-Valley area to fully realize the music.

2008 Medfield High School graduates (and current NYC residents) Matt Aucoin and Nick Pope were brought on to contribute to the record. Aucoin, cousin of Joseph, played piano, electric piano, and organ, and Pope played drums and auxiliary percussion. 2002 Algonquin Regional High School graduate Eric Pfeifer also collaborated to co-mix half the record with Joseph.

While the nine songs on Homebody form a single plot line, it was created in a way thatwould ensure that each musician’s unique voice would be maintained. Joseph structured the songs on guitar and voice prior to entering the studio, but didn’t give away much information to the others involved prior to recording.

“I wanted to capture everyone’s initial reaction to the music, so I hardly showed them any material before we recorded. Everyone brought in has a quality about them that makes it seem like they are speaking when they play. I gave them a very basic idea of the songs or sometimes no information at all and just watched them react to the music. It was very exciting to watch these players I respect so much finish a take and immediately want to do another because they were onto something they were excited about.

In addition to the record, a custom digital music player for the dot and logic website was created by Drew Clark (Hopkinton High School '08) and David Kaplan (Wellesley High School '08). Clark designed the online artwork and Kaplan programmed the unique player for www.dotandlogic.com.

The player will stream the entire record as well as feature custom artwork only viewable on the site.

Joseph has done extensive work with the town of Hopkinton and local band Take Care before moving to Brooklyn, and he is very aware of the support his hometown community has provided him.
