Taunton Man Charged In Fatal, Wrong-Way I-495 Crash

The crash south of the Mass Pike along I-495 closed the highway for hours early Wednesday morning.

HOPKINTON, MA — A Taunton man is facing a criminal charge after a fatal, wrong-way collision along I-495 in Hopkinton early Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just after midnight in the northbound lanes near exit 58. According to state police, Devin Arroyo, 29, was driving a van southbound in the northbound lanes when he collided with a northbound driver in a sedan.

A semitrailer then collided with the sedan from behind after being unable to stop in time to avoid the first collision.

The sedan driver, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial in Worcester. Arroyo was treated for minor injuries, and the semitrailer driver, a Providence man, was not hurt.

The crash closed I-495 between about 12:15 and near 5 a.m. Wednesday.

State police arrested Arroyo on an operating under the influence of alcohol charge.
