HOLLISTON, MA — A sudden bridge closure announced Tuesday will mean detours along a main road in Holliston "for the foreseeable future," town officials said.

Holliston said the Woodland Street bridge across Factory Pond Dam — across from a notable bridge along the Upper Charles Rail Trail — would close to traffic effective 4 p.m. Tuesday. Plans were already in place to replace the bridge.

"Though the long-term replacement of this bridge was already in the planning stages, the current state of the bridge requires closure until further notice, per MassDOT and the town’s independent engineering consultant, PARE Corp," the town said in a bulletin.

These traffic restrictions went into effect Tuesday afternoon:

  • Traffic using Woodland from near the intersection of Route 16 and Route 126 will detour down Lowland Street, with connections back to Woodland using Fiske and Central streets
  • Traffic heading north up Woodland from Central Street and the main Upper Charles trail parking lot will dead end near the entrance to the Placentino and Miller elementary school parking lots

Here's where the closed bridge is located:
