Chemical Clean-Up at Everett Casino Site Underway
The Mystic River site had several chemical plants through the decades and has been inaccessible to the public for more than 100 years.

Wynn Resorts announced that site remediation started this week on the 33-acre former chemical plant site that will become the $1.7 billion five-star Wynn Everett Resort.
The waterfront site on the Mystic River was the location of several chemical plants through the decades and has been inaccessible to the public for more than 100 years.
Charter Contracting Company, LLC, a Boston-based, minority-owned firm. was awarded the contract to conduct the initial phase of land cleanup, which will take approximately four months to complete. The multi-phase site remediation will cost an estimated $30 million in total. Wynn will pay the entire cost of the cleanup with no public funds being used, according to company officials.

Site preparation and pre-construction activities began in September.
“With the award of this contract, Wynn is about to erase more than a century of environmental neglect by converting a barren brownfield into a spectacular waterfront destination,” said Robert DeSalvio, president of Wynn Everett, in a statement. “

The rendering of the proposed casino riverwalk was made public in August.
Charter is a land remediation and civil construction company known for its work on high-visibility, complicated projects with multiple stakeholders. The company has consistently received national recognition from Engineering News Record as a Top 200 Environmental Firm.

GZA, headquartered in Massachusetts, is the Licensed Site Professional for the project. The Commonwealth grants this official and licensed designation to contractors that advise on and oversee remediation efforts.

Wynn Everett is a proposed $1.7 billion project that will include a five-star resort with more than 600 hotel rooms, high-end spa, retail, dining, ballroom and meeting space. Situated on 33 acres along the Mystic River, the site will allow for public enjoyment of the waterfront with paths that provide access to the harbor and retail and dining experiences that overlook the river walk. The resort will generate more than 4,000 construction jobs, more than 4,000 permanent jobs with excellent salaries and benefits and approximately $260 million in annual tax revenue to the state.
