A Quick Look at the School Chief Candidate Interviews

Malden's own Robert McCarthy and Revere's David DeRuosi answered questions about the top school post in town.

So far two of the three finalists for the Malden School Superintendent's job have been interviewed by the school committee.

Robert McCarthy, a counselor at the Beebe School in Malden was interviewed last Friday and David DeRuosi, assistant school superintendent in Revere was interviewed on Monday. Chris Scott, superintendent of schools in Lowell, is scheduled to be interviewed on June 6.

Here are the highlights from the first two interviews:

Robert McCarthy ()

  • Background: Has worked more than 25 years in the Malden school system. Currently a counselor at the Beebe School. Before that, he spent 24 years as the director of career development, business and entrepreneurship.
  • Quote of Note: “I grew up in Malden. I know the pulse of this city. I feel I can hit the ground running in the position.”
  • Something else to know about him:  McCarthy said technology can be used to reduce costs and to engage students who are now digital learners. He suggested giving students iPads would be cheaper than spending thousands of dollars each year to buy new books. 

David DeRuosi’s ()

  • Background: Began his education career in 1993. Was principal of Revere High School for 12 years before becoming assistant superintendent in Revere last year.
  • Quote of Note: “The concept that all children can learn is a great catchphrase, but do you have a culture and environment in your community and in your buildings and in the school district that supports that?”
  • Something else to know about him: DeRuosi said he’s not looking for a series of superintendencies and is looking for a place to stay and make a career.

All three candidates are hoping to replace.
