Malden Dedicating New Council Chambers To First Black Councilor
The chambers will be rededicated to Herbie Jackson, after whom the former City Hall chambers were named in 1978.
MALDEN, MA — Malden will hold a rededication event formally naming the City Council Chambers at the new City Hall after Herbert "Herbie" Jackson, Malden's first Black city councilor.
Jackson enjoyed a 30-year career in public service, first joining the City Council in Ward 7 from 1945-1947 before representing Ward 5 from 1947-1951 and later serving as councilor-at-large from 1965-1975. He was elected council president four times during his tenure.
Jackson became the first Black state representative from Malden, serving from 1950-1954, and was the first Black district governor of the Lions Club in the United States.

Following Jackson's death in 1978, Malden named its council chambers after him at the former City Hall. The city will continue the tradition and formally dedicate the new chambers to Jackson at a ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 24 from 5-6:30 p.m.
The new City Hall building is located at 215 Pleasant Street.
