MALDEN, MA — A Malden student was recently presented with a commendation for his actions after witnessing a fire.

Vinnie Spartachino, a student of Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Technical School, was walking on Beachview Avenue during the early morning hours of Thursday, May 22. He noticed smoke and flames emanating from one residence and immediately banged on the door to notify the residents, followed by a call to 911. According to the city, his quick action prevented the blaze from extending from the porch to the rest of the house. Everyone living in the home was able to safely evacuate unharmed.

Mayor Gary Christenson presented Spartachino with a citation on Tuesday, June 17.
