Malden Man Shot By Police Identified

Steve Brawley, 62, was arraigned on two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon from Massachusetts General Hospital Friday.

MALDEN, MA — Authorities identified the man shot by police in Malden Thursday. Steve Brawley, 62, of Malden, was arraigned virtually from Massachusetts General Hospital Friday on two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said Brawley was armed with a knife during an altercation with a Massachusetts State Police trooper and two Malden police officers on Beach Street.

Brawley was ordered held without bail. A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Around 12:04 p.m. Thursday, Malden police responded to the area of Beach and Lynn streets after a state police trooper requested assistance for a man armed with a knife. During the altercation, Brawley tried to stab the trooper and one of the Malden officers, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said.

The trooper shot Brawley, who was in stable condition Thursday afternoon, state police said. He remained hospitalized Friday.

The investigation into the shooting has been referred to the Bristol District Attorney's office, as the trooper involved was previously assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Detective Unit.
