MALDEN, MA β€” Malden will mark Juneteenth with a virtual ceremony Friday at 9 a.m. The event will include a flag raising ceremony, a speech by Ferryway Principal Abdel Sepulveda and performances by local poet Terry Carter and singer Martinez McNeil. Mayor Gary Christenson will also read a proclamation declaring the day "Juneteenth Freedom Day" in Malden.

MaldenCORE will not host an evening Juneteenth Freedom Celebration with activities, food and performances this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The virtual event combines the flag raising and performances from local artists into a single event.

This is the third year Malden has observed Juneteenth, which is the oldest known celebration of the abolition of slavery in the United States.
