Malden Police Promotes 2 Decorated Officers
Both officers have more than 20 years of service to the city each.
MALDEN, MA — Community members gathered at police headquarters at 800 Eastern Ave. this week for a promotional ceremony of two decorated officers.
Jack Lanni was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant, while Salvator Gennetti was promoted from Detective to Sergeant.
Lanni has 20 years of experience with Malden police. He graduated from Northeaster nUniversity with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Prior to becoming a police officer, he worked as a security manager which Cronin said helped prepare him for his current responsibilities. His job titles for the department include patrol officer and detective for the Criminal Investigations Division.

“Jack (Lanni) is well respected by his peers. That respect is reflected in his service as President of the Superior Officers Union and previously as President of the Patrol Officers Union,” Cronin said. “These roles are not given lightly. They speak to the confidence his fellow officers place in his ability to communicate and represent them with integrity.”
Gennetti joined Malden police in 1997 as a cadet and was eventually sworn in as an officer in 2004. His father, Commissioner Butch Gennetti, worked for more than 60 years in the department. Cronin said the late Commissioner always wanted to see his son promoted to Sergeant.

“It’s a moment of pride, reflection, and continuity,” Cronin said about Sal Gennetti’s promotion. “One that honors both service and sacrifice.”
Sal Gennetti earned the Medal of Valor in 2006 due to his actions in disarming and subduing a person who tried to steal his weapon from his waistband. His resume also includes solving a years-long cold case that involved extraditing the suspect from Atlanta, Georgia back to Massachusetts.
The pair were sworn in by Town Clerk Carol Desiderio, as she made them recite an oath in unison.
