MALDEN, MA — Patrons of the Malden Public Library now have an opportunity to check out a lot more than books thanks to the grand opening of the Library of Things.

The initiative is designed to empower the community to reduce waste and conserve resources by borrowing a wide range of items instead of owning them.

The available items are listed online, and adult patrons can check them out with just a library card. The items can be picked up at the library, located at 36 Salem St.

Examples of available items include: a stud finder, metal detector, snow shoes with poles and a photo scanner. The items can be borrowed for up to two weeks and cannot be renewed.

"The Library of Things concept is simple but revolutionary: instead of buying and owning rarely-used items, residents of Malden may now check them out with just a library card, encouraging a culture of reuse and resourcefulness. This innovative library extension promotes sustainability and provides residents access to an array of items they may need for various projects and activities," the library said in a statement.

The library used the example of a sewing machine as the type of item that could be found at the Library of Things.

"By borrowing a sewing machine from the Library of Things, residents can complete their projects (ideally repairing clothing instead of throwing it out) without the need for long-term ownership, ultimately reducing clutter and environmental impact," the library said.

According to library staff, patrons looking to place a hold or pick up a Library of Things item can do so at the information desk. When patrons are borrowing an item for the first time, they will be asked to sign a borrower's agreement and waiver.

The library said it is also accepting donations for the Library of Things. Among the items the library is looking to add are:

  • Home improvement items (small, simple toolbox with tools)
  • Cooking items that are easy to clean, and compact in size (cake tins for birthday parties)
  • Crafting supplies (yarn winder)
  • Bike supplies (bike lock, bike repair kit)
