MALDEN, MA — Sen. Ed Markey (D, Massachusetts) announced he will attend the funeral for Pope Francis at the Vatican in Rome on Saturday, April 26.

Markey met Pope Francis in the spring of 2014 to discuss the challenge of climate change and encourage the Roman Catholic Church to advocate for the issue. Markey said that meeting has inspired him since it took place 11 years ago.

“Pope Francis held a unique power in convening people, instilling in them a moral obligation to act boldly on the world’s most pressing issues, and guiding them through dark and difficult times with his wisdom, humility, and compassion,” Markey said in a press release.
