Police Shoot, Injure Knife-Wielding Man In Malden

MALDEN, MA — A Massachusetts State Police trooper shot a man armed with a knife in Malden Thursday. The man is in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital, state police said.

An emergency call came in for a man acting erratically at the Stop & Shop in Revere, police said. The man was asked to leave and walked onto Beach Street into Malden, where he encountered an on-duty state police trooper, police said.

Witnesses said the man was armed with a knife. The trooper repeatedly demanded the man drop the weapon, but he continued walking west down Beach Street toward the Olive Street intersection, police said.

The trooper was joined by two Malden police officers. The group tried to forcibly disarm the man, but they were unsuccessful, police said.

"At some point, the trooper discharged his firearm, striking the subject," state police Colonel Chris Mason said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Police said the man remained combative after he was shot. He was taken into custody and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A knife was found on him, state police said.

The officers involved in the shooting were brought to the hospital for evaluations.
