Boda Borg Boston, a Swedish company, recently opened its first U.S. franchise in Malden Square, 90 Pleasant St., Malden, Mass.

“It’s been going great,” said Chad Ellis, one of the owners of Boda Borg Boston. “We’ve had over a 1,000 guests since we’ve been open.”

There are seven Boda Borg locations in Sweden that are popular destinations for families, youth groups and businesses. The Malden location, which opened Oct. 10, occupies 30,000 square-feet of the former Sparks Department Store. Boda Borg Boston participants are transported into a real-world gaming environment; an experience called Questing.

“I think the furthest guest has been from Florida,” Ellis said. “We’ve also had people from New Jersey, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, and from all over Massachusetts.”

A team of three to five people are needed to begin a quest, with one quest containing multiple challenges within it. Each challenge plays out in its own room, and players can only access the next room if they complete the challenge before it. A successful quest ends in an unlocked stamp box, where players are able to stamp their cards to show that they’ve completed all challenges. If players fail a challenge, they must restart from the initial room.

Each quest is very different and are color coded based on their varying levels of physical difficulty. Green quests are not very strenuous, while red quests may require people to do some crawling or light climbing. And even though black quests are the most physically challenging, all quests will challenge your mind.

A two-hour pass in Malden is $18, or serious gamers can opt for the one-day pass for $28.

This new addition to Malden Square is projected to bring hundreds of thousands of new visitors in its first couple of years, according to city officials.
