Ultrino Named Mass. Association of School Committees Treasurer

The Malden School Committee has been an MASC member since 2008.

On January 1, 2011, Steven Ultrino, a member of the Malden School Committee since 2004, will become Secretary-Treasurer of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC). He was elected to the position at the Association's annual meeting in Hyannis on November 3, 2010. Ultrino is the first executive member of MASC from Malden since 1947.

In 2008 Ultrino was elected to the MASC Board of Directors as Secretary-Treasurer of Division IX (Urban). The following year he was elected the Division's Vice Chair, in which role he has been a strong proponent of urban issues and collaborated with other members to develop programs and special events around key leadership and legislative concerns. He has also been a presenter at the recent MASC/MASS Conference on the topic of effective school boardsmanship.

Ultrino is actively engaged on the School Committee. For the past three years he has served as Vice Chair of the Committee, working closely with the Chair, Mayor Richard Howard. He has also served three years as Co-Chair of the Budget Subcommittee and is former Chair of the Policy Committee and currently sits on the Policy Subcommittee. Ultrino is also very involved in local community organizations. A long-standing member of the YMCA of Malden, he served on its board of directors as vice chair; serves as treasurer of the Msgr. Neagle Housing Association and as a member of the Malden Kiwanis Club.

Professionally, Ultrino is currently Director of Education at the Middlesex Sheriff 's Office, having previ- ously been Principal and Business Manager at St. Mary's Parish School in Winchester and a teacher at Malden Catholic High School. A graduate of Suffolk University (B.A. and M.S.) and Emmanuel College (CAGS), Ultrino expects to receive his Ed.D from NOVA Southeastern University in the spring of 2011. His research topic is roles and responsibilities of elected school committee members and its relationship with student achievement.

MASC is a non-profit organization that represents more than 2,100 Massachusetts school committee members in over 330 local and regional school districts throughout the commonwealth, providing its members a wide range of training programs, policy development and administrator search services, as well as legal and advocacy support.
