Early Morning Accident Ends In Breaking and Entering

Thomas C. Murphy was arrested on multiple charges early Friday morning.

An early morning car accident quickly escalated Friday when the suspect allegedly tried to break into a home.

Shortly after 1 a.m., police received several calls reporting a one-car accident in the area of Pleasant Street. When police arrived, they found the vehicle, a gray Hyundai Accent, at the scene but found no driver.

Police called the owner of the vehicle who said his friend, Thomas C. Murphy, had borrowed the vehicle.

Police searched the town and issued a "be on the look out" alert for Murphy in area cities and towns. At 4:28 a.m., a resident of Gerald Road called police to say someone was trying to break into their home.

When police arrived, they found Murphy, 28, of 17 Waldron St., Marblehead. They charged him with assault and battery on a police officer following a scuffle at the home, attempting to commit a crime (breaking and entering in the night) and resisting arrest. Murphy was also wanted on a non-Marblehead related warrant.
