Two Boat Rescues Off Marblehead Sunday Afternoon

Marblehead's harbormaster and the US Coast Guard had their hands full Sunday afternoon.

Afternoon wind and choppy seas led to changing conditions on the water Sunday -- and two boat rescues. At 1:03 p.m., a sailboat was reported to be up on the rocks at Tinker's Island. At the same time, a report of a sinking boat came in off Crowninshield Road.

The harbormaster and US Coast Guard responded to the Tinker's Island scene first and found one person with a lifejacket on the island. The other person was still on the boat. No injuries were reported. Marine units worked to clear the ship from the island and tow it to shore.

At the same time the habormaster and Coast Guard were helping the distressed boat on Tinker's Island, a call came in about a sinking boat off Crowninshield Road.

According to police reports, someone on the Aquasport reported they were about to go underwater. The two people on the boat were wearing life vests. 

Since the harbormaster was tied up on Tinker's Island, Salem's harbormaster was called to assist the sinking ship.

At the same time, a civilian boater headed out to assist and Marblehead Police tried to get a visual of the sinking boat from shore.

Before the boat could sink, the US Coast Guard and Salem Harbormaster were able to reach the boat and tow it to land. No injuries were reported.
