100 Years Ago: A Nearby Drowning is a Local Tragedy

Six days a weeks (Mon—Sat) Marlborough Patch will highlight an interesting story from the Marlborough Daily Enterprise published on that date 100 years ago.

June 21, 1911: Drowning at Lake Boon: Jos. R. Lawrence of Charlestown Thrown from Canoe in Upper Basin

Lake Boon, June 20 —A drowning accident of more than usual sadness took place today, when Joseph R. Lawrence of Charlestown, 21 years old son of Thomas R. and Elizabeth Lawrence, met death in the waters of the upper basin. The fatality occurred in front of the 1915 cottage, and Neil Callahan and Harry Steele, both of Maynard, had narrow escapes from the same fate while trying to rescue him.

Lawrence went to bathe and was in a canoe when he was thrown into the water. Although a swimmer, he appeared to be in distress and sent up a despairing cry for help. Steele and Callahan went to his assistance and all three went down together. They were finally forced to relinquish their hold upon the unfortunate man, who sank for the third time.
