Travel Back in Time: First Church of Marlborough

The current building, built in 1853, was the third structure built at the present location of Spring Hill.
According to their website, the original church was constructed in 1662 at a different location and was known as the Church of Christ of Marlborow.

"This Meeting House was a small, one-storied building with oilpaper in the windows for light and a thatched roof, built on the site of the present Walker Building," said the site.
This house of worship was burnt to the ground by the local indians in 1676, then rebuilt on the same plot of land a year later. A much larger facility than the ramshackle original was built 11 years later in 1688.

The first meeting place on Spring Hill was built in 1806, said church records, then redesigned in 1836, only to burn down again in 1852.
Though the church has sojourned the centuries through many different incarnations, its identity has remained the same for much of that time. Over 30 ministers have led the assembly since its founding, and since 1962, First Church has been identified as a member of the United Church of Christ.
