5 Things: Alcohol Use Probed in Fatal Accident, New 5k in Medford, A Clear Forecast

Police in Florida are investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in a car crash that killed a pregnant woman from Medford, according to a CBS news report from Miami. Alanna DeMella died March 18 when a car driven by Rosa Rivera went off the road and crashed into her vacation cabana in Ft. Lauderdale. DeMella, a Medford resident, was 7 months pregnant. Rivera was served with a warrant last month to provide police a blood sample to test whether alcohol or drugs factored in the crash, the CBS Miami report said.
2. New 5k Will Take Runners Along Revere's Ride in Medford: The Patriotic 5k, which will be run the day before the Big Race on Patriots Day, will take runners through Medford along a piece of Paul Revere's route on his historic ride, according to CoolRunning.com

The former rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Medford has been removed from priesthood and is under investigation by Medford Police on allegations of sexual assault, according to a report in Tuesday's Boston Globe. Robert M. Durkee, 85, was removed from the preisthood last week after a woman accused him of sexually abusing her in 1980 while she was in college, the Globe report said. Two more women came forward after his dismissal who alleged Durkee abused them during counseling sessions in 1983, the report said.
4. Community Read Tackles Slavery: Medford Public Library's community read program, which will run through May, focuses on slavery this year. The series includes a documentary screening and guest speakers.
