Here are five things to know today.

Medford to Hire 8 New Firefighters: The Medford Fire Department has received a grant worth over $1 million that will allow it to hire eight new firefighters, according to an announcement from the city. The grant will be enough to fund the eight new positions for two years, after that it will be up to the city to come up with funding.

Weather: There's a 20 percent chance of rain today with highs expected in the mid 70s, according to the National Weather Service. Similar weather is expected tomorrow.

Medford on Charter School Shortlist: The state has asked a dozen groups with proposals for new charter schools for more information -- including one that would serve Medford. A total of 22 groups submitted proposals for new charter schools programs in Massachusetts, and the Department of Education has asked 12 of those groups to submit full applications, according to an announcement made last week
