Around the Region: Catherine Greig Pleads Guilty, Wakefield Resident's Peace Corp Dedication 40 Years Strong

:  When Wakefield resident Liz Freeman signed up to become a member of the Peace Corps in 1970, she had no idea her assignment would take her to the Philippines. Or that she'd still be helping the Filipino people 40 years later. "When I signed up, I was one of the shyest kids in school, and everyone expected me to not last two years," she said. "Well, you had to pay for your own way home if you didn't stay, so I was thinking: South America, walk," she joked. But Freeman wasn't sent to South America. : Those who park at one of Melrose's three commuter rail stops to jump on the train into Boston will pay an additional $1 per day and more for multi-day parking passes, after the Melrose Board of Aldermen approved the increases Monday night. The aldermen by an 8-2 vote approved City Hall's  request to bump the $2 daily rate to $3. Also, the $35 monthly passes would be eliminated, replaced by the option of purchasing at new pay-and-display machines either a 10-day pass for $27.50 or a 20-day pass for $50. -Daniel DeMaina

Catherine Greig, longtime girlfriend to reputed Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, pleaded guilty in federal court this afternoon to conspiracty to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud. In pleading guilty, Greig admitted to having a close personal relationship with Bulger, fleeing from the Boston area with him in 1995 and assisting him while he hid from authorities for 16 years. Greig admitted to using false identities to conceal herself during her time in hiding. Bulger and Greig were ultimately arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 22, 2011. -Chris Orchard
