Assault Suspect Held; Intersection Safety Concerns; The Green Line; Local Top Docs

Medford's week in review. Nov. 11 to Nov. 18, 2011.

 

A 22-year-old man charged with sexually assaulting multiple women in Medford and Somerville appeared in Somerville District Court Friday morning. He appeared before Judge Neil Walker in Somerville District Court Friday, where he was ordered held until Nov. 22, when the arraignment will continue.

Frustrated over how dangerous the intersection has become, residents near George Street at Winthrop Street went to City Hall Tuesday to ask the City Council to help them get the crosswalk there repainted and have further safety measures implemented. “That intersection on George and Winthrop is a death trap, and I mean that literally,” Medford resident Julian Orbanes told the council. Concern around the intersection has been elevated after a teenager was hit by a car while cross the street there on Oct. 17 and had to be treated at the hospital with minor injuries.

Medford City Councilors were shown how the area around Boston Avenue and Mystic Valley Parkway could be redeveloped if the Green Line were brought there. They also heard from residents, some who critiqued the development vision, or the possibility of the project in general, and others who supported it.

Three doctors at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Medford have been named "Top Doctors" by U.S. News and World Report. Gastroenterologist James Kemp, MD, Urologist James Ku and Cardiologist Steven Lampert all made the U.S. News list.

Cold weather and drunkeness have led to safety issues in recent year, according to the report, and school officials have warned students caught will be suspended.
