City Strikes Health Care Deal, Smashed Cars Near Tufts, Fatal Crash Brings Charges

Good morning, here's five things to know today:

Medford's Mayor and municipal unions signed off on a new health care agreement where union workers will leave the city's health plan for the state's Group Insurance Commission health coverage. The 6 1/2 year agreement projects to save the city over $25 million and save union employees about $9.7 million, Mayor Michael McGlynn said in a press conference Tuesday morning.

A Medford man faces three charges following a fatal accident on I-93 in Wilmington Monday, police said. Greg Galanopolous, 49, is charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to a State Police press release. One man died and another was seriously injured after the Chevy Van driven by Galanopolous swerved from the southbound passing lane into the middle lane and struck a box truck about 5 p.m. Monday, police said.

The Rain is Gone: Temperatures in the low 80s today with sunny skies, according to the National Weather Service. Similar highs tomorrow with a 20 percent chance of showers.

The vehicle tipped near 10 Overlook Ridge Dr., near a residential complex in the former Rowe's Quarry. No injuries were reported over the broadcasts, with officials describing the accident as “minor."

A 2009 Chevy Silverado, a 2003 Volkswagon Golf and a 1995 BMW M3 were among seven cars that suffered smashed mirrors early Saturday morning when a Tufts student allegedly ran away from an off-duty Arlington cop, hitting the mirrors as he went. The mirror smashing took place along Conwell Avenue in West Somerville at about 1:30 a.m on Aug. 13.
